On the last day of 2019, it was reported that an unknown virus started spreading in the city of Wuhan, China. This virus was said to cause fever with other symptoms, such as cough, loss of smell and taste, fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Without proper medication, the virus can progress and cause pneumonia, resulting in death. Later on, this virus was known as COVID-19, a new strain in the coronavirus family.
COVID-19 was described as highly contagious, which is why countries worldwide started closing their borders in an attempt to slow down the spread. Besides the travel restrictions, several health protocols were mandated, such as wearing masks, staying indoors, and social distancing. But even with these precautions, the virus continued to infect more people, regardless of their age, gender, or race.
Fortunately, medical professionals were able to create COVID testing kits, such as the PCR Test. These tests offered tremendous help in quickly identifying those infected with the virus. And through their continuous efforts, vaccines have also been developed. Although these vaccines were not explicitly designed to immunise a person against COVID-19, they have served their purpose by boosting one’s immune system. Vaccinated individuals were proven to show weaker symptoms, and their chance of survival has increased.
These developments are truly remarkable, but people are still advised to be cautious and continue following the mandated health protocols. Because even if there are already vaccines and travels are already allowed, as long as you can present a negative PCR test result or a fit to fly COVID test, the virus is still very much active. In fact, it has evolved into several mutations, namely the Delta and Omicron variants.
With this in mind, it is still important to check whether or not you and your family belong to the category of high risk for COVID. The list of high risk includes persons with comorbidities, immunocompromised, pregnant, and elderly.
